Introduction: Design Rooted in Memory

While many international fashion projects start from trends or formal experimentation, Bedtime Stories takes a different approach.

The project is inspired by personal childhood memories and, specifically, the stories told by the designer’s father — including the tale behind his Chinese name.

From the very beginning, it becomes clear that this is more than a garment; it is a design narrative, a story expressed through fabric, form, and concept.

Narrative as the Core of the Design

In Bedtime Stories, storytelling is not just supplementary — it forms the backbone of the project.

Three key concepts, derived from the designer’s Chinese name, shape the entire collection:
• Peng (鵬): the mythical Roc, symbolizing transformation and transcendence
• Han (瀚): the infinite dreamscape, representing limitless imagination
• Lin (林): the family forest, symbolizing home, roots, and heritage

These concepts are translated into sculptural silhouettes, symbolic surfaces, and construction techniques.
From our perspective as reviewers, this clarity of vision combined with execution is a primary reason why the project achieved Gold.

Sculptural Silhouettes: Form in Service of Meaning

One of the most compelling features of this project is its sculptural silhouettes:
• Bold and expressive
• Structural and avant-garde
• More like wearable sculptures than conventional garments

But the exaggeration is purposeful. The forms reflect:
• Transformation
• The movement between dream and reality
• The tension between past and future

This balance of concept and execution is precisely what top-tier juries look for in Gold-winning designs.

Material and Construction: Storytelling through Fabric

Beckham Lin, as a fiber artist, treats materials as part of the narrative rather than mere tools.

The project’s use of fabric manipulation, layering, and symbolic textures enhances the storytelling:
• Conveying memory
• Reflecting myth and personal history
• Transforming conceptual ideas into wearable art

From our perspective, mastery over material and technique is a clear indicator of maturity — a hallmark of award-winning projects.

Identity Over Trend

Another key reason Bedtime Stories deserves Gold is its independence from fleeting trends:
• It does not attempt to replicate current fashion trends
• It does not rely solely on visual shock value

Instead, it asks a deeper question:

“Who am I, and how can my identity be expressed through design?”

This focus on identity-driven design sets it apart on the international stage.
